White Paper: Proposed Regulations on Medical Tourism For UK Patients

As the global medical tourism market continues to expand — driven largely by lower costs and reduced waiting times — there is an urgent need to establish robust safeguards for UK patients seeking plastic surgery abroad.

Postoperative complications, such as implant rejection/failure, infections, sepsis, and pulmonary embolism, not only endanger patients’ health and lives but also place additional strain on the NHS through increased demand for corrective treatment and emergency care. As a result, Longevita’s founder and CEO, Kagan Seymenoglu, has made the following policy proposals:

Establishment of a UK Medical Tourism Accreditation Association (UKMTAA) — An independent accreditation body only allowing providers with verifiable clinical governance, hygiene protocols, professional licensing and transparent complication rates onboard. There are many benefits to this organisation, including, but not limited to, enabling patients to:

  • Have easy access to pertinent information about clinics and clinicians.
  • Report substandard care, safety breaches and contractual violations.

Introduction of Medical Tourism Insurance — Travelling abroad for elective procedures would be contingent upon obtaining mandatory medical tourism insurance, ensuring patients are adequately protected. The proposed insurance will provide coverage for:

  • Surgical risks
  • Emergency repatriation
  • Aftercare

Provision of Aftercare within the UK — Patients undergoing surgery abroad will be eligible for post-operative care through licensed providers based in the UK. For the patients, it will entail:

  • Improved standards of healthcare
  • Reduced complications
  • Better treatment outcomes

Transparency and Accountability in Marketing Practices — Any overseas clinics, facilitators and intermediaries marketing to the UK audiences must carry UKMTAA’s seal of approval in the form of its logo and registration number on their marketing materials. This will also have several benefits for patients, including:

  • Easy vetting of accredited and compliant healthcare providers.
  • Reduced need for corrective care from the NHS

Further, with proposed tighter regulations on medical tourism advertising, patients will know the risks of the procedure they’re seeking, and through legal accountability and financial penalties, misleading and unverified advertising can be curbed.
